Enamel Exterior Coating

Enamel, the oldest coating material in the world, is an inorganic vitreous coating that bonds tightly to metal. Thought to have been discovered by the Egyptians before Christ, enamel was used mainly in artistic work until steel was developed in the 19th century. From then on it advanced alongside steel and, thanks to properties nothing else can replace, became an indispensable coating material.

The purpose of an enamel coating is to protect the surface. It also lends the surface it protects from corrosion some very valuable aesthetic qualities: it smooths the surface and gives it a glassy lustre. It is easy to clean and hygienic. Because it endures, its colours do not fade, it keeps its first-day appearance and it resists external effects. Enamel is neutral in smell and taste, so food kept in enamel storage containers undergoes no change in flavour or aroma — which is why the interiors of refrigerators are also enamelled. It resists both cold and heat, and is unaffected by sudden changes in temperature.

The properties of enamel are not enough on their own, however, because enamel is never used by itself: it is always bonded to a metal. Its compatibility with the metal it coats is therefore very important, and it must be bonded to the metal that suits it best.
